چکیده

Building services engineering is an important academic and professional subject area in Hong Kong. Basically, all the design, installation, testing, operation and maintenance of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, fire engineering systems, water supply and drainage systems, electrical services and control systems are included. Several degree programmes in building services engineering are offered at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Similar to other engineering disciplines, a certain level of mathematical competency is required in the programme. In this paper, engineering mathematics for satisfying the new requirements of those degree programmes is reviewed. Modified syllabuses to accomplish the use of the latest technology in this discipline are recommended. Further, the philosophy of providing a detailed but explicit guideline on how the teaching of engineering mathematics should be conducted is emphasized. A plan for the future development of a teaching portfolio for engineering mathematics has also been identified and discussed.

INTELLIGENT BUILDING ASSESSMENT BASED ON AN INTEGRATED MODEL OF FUZZY ANALYTIC HIERARCHY PROCESS AND FUZZY PREFERENCE DEGREE APPROACH (FAHP-FPDA)

Intelligent building (IB) technologies have widespread applications in the building design and development. In this regard, it is necessary to develop intelligent building assessment models in order to satisfy the clients, professionals, and occupants' growing demands. To this end, this paper proposes an integrated analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and preference degree approach (PDA) under the ...

Comparative study between dynamic transient and degree-hours methods to estimate heating and cooling loads of building’s wall

In this paper, dynamic transient method and conventional degree-hours method (static) have been compared to estimate heating and cooling loads of building’s wall. All main wall surfaces of various orientations, i.e.South, West, East, North, and horizontal are considered in the climate of Tehran, Iran. In this study, a conventional wall structure, which is comprisedconcrete as main wall material...

Software Engineering Programmes are not Computer Science Programmes

Programmes in “Software Engineering” have become a source of contention in many universities. Computer Science departments, many of which have used that phrase to describe individual courses for decades, claim software engineering as part of their discipline. Some engineering faculties claim “Software Engineering” as a new speciality in the family of engineering disciplines. This paper discusse...

Multiple Solutions for Slip Effects on Dissipative Magneto-Nanofluid Transport Phenomena in Porous Media: Stability Analysis

In the present paper, a numerical investigation of transport phenomena is considered in electrically-conducting nanofluid flow within a porous bed utilizing Buongiorno’s transport model and Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg fourth-fifth order method. Induced flow by non-isothermal stretching/shrinking sheet along with magnetic field impact, dissipation effect, and slip conditions at the surface are...
